Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) — Canberra

The Skills in Demand visa (Subclass 482) is Australia’s primary employer-sponsored temporary work visa. It replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa on 7 December 2024. OVEC assists both employers and skilled workers in Canberra and nationally with all aspects of the 482 visa process.

Who is this visa for?

The Subclass 482 visa is for skilled overseas workers who have been nominated by an approved Australian employer. It allows you to live and work in Australia temporarily, with a pathway to permanent residence for eligible holders.

The Three Streams

Core Skills Stream — For workers in occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Most 482 applications fall under this stream. The visa can be granted for up to 4 years.

Specialist Skills Stream — For highly specialised workers earning above the Specialist Skills Income Threshold. No occupation list applies.

Labour Agreement Stream — For workers sponsored under a formal labour agreement between an employer and the Australian Government.

For Employers — Sponsorship and Nomination

Before nominating a worker, your business must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor. OVEC assists Canberra employers with Standard Business Sponsorship applications, nomination lodgements, Labour Market Testing documentation, and ongoing sponsorship compliance obligations.

Pathway to Permanent Residence

Subclass 482 holders in the Core Skills stream may be eligible to apply for the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (Temporary Residence Transition stream) after two years of full-time work with their sponsoring employer. OVEC can advise you on your eligibility and timeline.
