The next invitation round for the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) is scheduled for 4 June 2026. If you have a live Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect, this is the time to review it carefully.
What Is the 189 Visa?
The Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, state or territory government, or a family member. It is points-tested, and invitations are issued through SkillSelect based on your score and occupation demand.
What You Should Check Before 4 June 2026
1. Is your points score accurate?
Your points claim must reflect your current situation. If your circumstances have changed — a new skills assessment, additional qualifications, improved English test score, or more Australian work experience — your EOI should be updated before the round.
2. Are all your details current?
SkillSelect does not automatically update your information. Check that your nominated occupation, employment history, qualifications, and personal details are accurate. Incorrect information can lead to visa refusal even after an invitation is issued.
3. Is your skills assessment still valid?
Most skills assessments are valid for a fixed period (typically three years). If yours has expired or is about to expire, you may need a fresh assessment before lodging a visa application following an invitation.
4. Is your EOI still active?
EOIs in SkillSelect remain active for two years from the date of submission, after which they expire. If your EOI has lapsed, you will need to submit a new one.
What Happens After the Round?
If you receive an invitation, you will have 60 days to lodge your 189 visa application. The lodgement date determines your visa application date, so it is important to have all documents ready before the round.
Why Get Professional Advice?
Points calculations, occupation lists, and eligibility requirements change. A registered migration agent can review your EOI before the round to ensure your points claim is correct, your occupation is on the relevant skilled list, and your application will be competitive.
